Clinical Pathologist
Karen graduated from the University of Pretoria South Africa in 1994. She spent three years in private practice in South Africa and in the United Kingdom. In 1997 she completed an Honours degree at the University of Pretoria, in clinical pathology, small animal internal medicine and immunology, graduating cum laude.
She continued her career starting as a resident and later promoted to Senior Clinical pathologist at Axiom Vet Laboratories in the United Kingdom, formerly known as Bloxham Vet Lab and later a division of Heska Ltd. Axiom was one of the leading private laboratories in the United Kingdom renowned for their quality of work. During this period she spend time training as a visiting pathologist abroad in Canada and the USA at the University of Guelph, University of Purdue Indiana and University of Gainsville Florida, under the supervision of several boarded pathologists considered pioneers in their contribution to the field of Clinical pathology. This time also included a year at the Royal Veterinary collage in London. She became a Diplomate of the American Collage of Pathologists (clinical pathology) by examination in 2000. Her responsibilities included interpretation of all aspects of clinical pathology, liaising with laboratory scientists, client consultation, part of the management committee and starting a residency program.
Her publications include contributions to Clinical pathology texts books, electronic media in particular Vetstream’s CD Canis, Felis and Equis as well as peer reviewed scientific journals. She regularly attends international congresses in clinical pathology to keep abreast with advances in the field. She hopes to continue her passion for clinical pathology serving veterinary colleagues throughout Australia as a member of the Gribbles Veterinary Pathology team. She joined Gribbles in February 2008.
