Elizabeth McInnes qualified as a veterinary surgeon from the University of Pretoria in South Africa in 1988. She worked at the Medical University of Southern Africa before coming to the United Kingdom in 1992 to complete a PhD on the immunology of respiratory syncytial virus at Imperial College, London. She completed a residency in veterinary pathology at the Veterinary School at the University of Cambridge and was awarded the Membership of the Royal College of Pathologists in 1997 and the Fellowship in 2005.

Liz McInnes has 10 years of experience in toxicological pathology and has a special interest in immunology, cross reactivity studies and pathology artefacts.

Elizabeth McInnes has published over 30 papers on pathology, is currently editing an atlas on background lesions in laboratory animals and is an associate editor of the journal of Toxicological Pathology. She has been an examiner for the Royal Collage of Pathologists since 2006 and is currently the secretary of the BSTP subcommittee on education and a symposium director for the C.L. Davis DVM Foundation.
